The American Coot (misnamed as usual) is not at all shy. Unfortunately this invites abuse from Nova Scotia Birders who approach too close. It will easily survive our winter as long as it can find grass to munch on. It is not a duck but a ground foraging bird of the family of Gruiformes which includes the rails and gallinules
