Mushrooms, Fungi, Lichens and MossesSmiley's Provincial Park is a bonanza for mushrooms, fungi, lichens and mosses in late August and early September. I suspect this is due to the alkaline soil in the area which also fosters the growth of rare orchids such as the Showy Lady's Slipper Orchid and the Ram's Head Orchid. The Helleborine Orchid(http://www.hanstoom.com/p20367586) is currently in bloom here all along the trail sides. I've made no attempt to identify the specimens in this mix of species, so enjoy the colours and shapes. For a snapshot of the lot go here: http://www.hanstoom.com/p92522984
